Trialing Communication Software
To meet insurance funding requirements and gather crucial learner preference data, trials with a high-tech AAC device are often necessary. During therapy sessions, the learner will have access to the device and communication software for as long as needed to determine preferences and collect data. Additionally, a formal trial device can be obtained from a device manufacturer for home use.
The objectives of a device trial include:
Determining learner preferences for a particular communication software.
Discovering what personalizations and access methods are most appropriate.
Exposure of device and software to communication partners (e.g., siblings, parents/caregivers).
During the trial period, time is allocated to exploring various communication software options. Priority is placed on software that aligns with the learner's preferences.
The trial concludes once a clear preference for a communication software is evident. Following this, an AAC evaluation appointment will be scheduled, during which the learner's interaction with the preferred device will be observed.
